Set clear expectations with your research students at the beginning of your relationship to avoid miscommunication later, including how much time they are expected to spend on the research and what kinds of deliverables they will need to produce.

  • It will often not be possible in the early stages of a research relationship to specify exactly what will need to be accomplished by students and by when. Nevertheless, it should be possible to establish in general terms what level of commitment is expected of students and the types of work they are likely to need to do.
