Assign each student a procedural role necessary for the group to function to create the most equitable environment.

  • If a student’s role is important to the group, both the student and the group may be more likely to perceive the student who holds that role as important and having something to contribute.
  • These roles should be about getting work done, for example:
    • Recorder - This job ensures everyone is taking notes
    • Supplies manager - ensures all necessary items to complete task are present and accounted for.
  • Note from CS Teaching Tips Team: be careful in assigning roles to make sure roles assignment doesn’t reinforce gender stereotypes (like a girl always being the recorder or being the recorder more frequently).
