Address Misconceptions About the Field of CS

Don’t let gender stereotypes affect your classroom.

Emphasize that having more experience does not make some students smarter than others.

Use resources that students are likely to access independently to maximize their use.

Invite guest speakers to introduce students to the varied professions and people in computer science, especially to encourage girls to see themselves taking up STEM careers.

Have finishing students write advice to incoming students.

Emphasize that computer science teaches a way of thinking that can be used in careers in the tech industry and beyond.

Invite research teams from local universities to motivate your students by presenting their research.

Encourage girls to get involved in CS by emphasizing the importance of diverse perspectives in the industry and by informing them of the vast opportunities in the computer science industry.

Encourage students to stick with CS by providing them with role models and mentors in the tech fields.

Take the time to encourage girls and students of color and tell them that academic abilities can expand and improve, as they often internalize cultural expectations that they have little innate CS ability.
