Use plagiarism detection tools such as AntiCutAndPaste and/or MOSS (Measure Of Software Similarity) to easily discover if any of your students are cheating off of one another.
Give students an opportunity (or force them) to use GDB and Valgrind. It teaches them how to use important debugging tools, it develops their debugging skills and it improves their code designing skills and code testing skills.
Give students constant exposure to code, even if they aren’t able to fully understand it right away, to develop their comfort with code over the long term.
