Use small whiteboards for formative assessments during class instead of clickers because they have a low overhead to get up and running and they allow you to quickly gauge student progress.

  • Small, printer-paper sized white boards are cheaper than clickers and don’t take near as much time to set up in the classroom.

    • Bring whiteboards and markers for students with you to class.

    • Alternative: You can use sheet protectors over a piece of cardstock as a cheap alternative.

  • Activity:

    • Give each student a small whiteboard and dry erase marker.

    • Give the class a problem to solve and ask students to write their answer on their board.

    • You can use all of the students’ answers to guide your instruction.
