Make all students say “I don’t understand” out loud, in front of the class to show them that nothing bad will happen to help them feel more comfortable saying something when they don’t understand something in the future.

  • Tell students to think of this as practice.
    • They are practicing now so they can feel more comfortable saying they don’t understand when it really matters.
  • After the students all speak, ask “Did anything bad just happen?” to reiterate your point.
  • This activity doesn’t take a lot of time, especially if you have students stand up and speak from their seats.
