  • Tell students that reading an assignment and making mental or physical notes counts as starting it.

Write encouraging notes, such as “Have you ever considered grad school?”, for undergraduate students who consistently do well in class to get them thinking about exciting postgrad opportunities like graduate school.
Reward students when they catch a mistake or ask a question you can’t answer to encourage critical thinking and engagement.
Empathize with students who struggled to get their code working, these students may not be ready to think about how to advance the design of their program; suggesting they refactor their code immediately after it finally runs can be discouraging.
