Be thoughtful when choosing colors for course materials, especially websites, because certain color combinations cause difficulties for students who are color blind.

  • For example, avoid red text over a green background which can make text indistinguishable to a student with red-green colorblindness.
  • Another common type of colorblindness is blue-yellow colorblindness. These individuals have difficulty distinguishing between bluish and greenish hues, and between yellowish and reddish hues.
  • Note from CS Teaching Tips Team: High contrast colors (like white text on a black background) and different shades of a single color (monochromatic color palette) are good color combination choices.
