Effective Encouragement

Don't worry about trying to match the modality of your instruction to students' "learning styles" since the importance of learning styles is a myth.

Call on all students equally to emphasize student equality and avoid creating a competitive environment. This prevents expert students from dominating during class since you’re not validating interruptive, show-offy behavior.

Reward code solutions that have the correct thinking and steps behind them, as this can often be reassuring for students.

Remember that each student has differing amounts of experience and skill sets when giving feedback.

Emphasize that having more experience does not make some students smarter than others.

Use resources that students are likely to access independently to maximize their use.

Emphasize rationale over accuracy to help students understand the overarching concepts, instead of the low-level details.

Invite guest speakers to introduce students to the varied professions and people in computer science, especially to encourage girls to see themselves taking up STEM careers.

Invite research teams from local universities to motivate your students by presenting their research.

Foster an “I can do it” learning environment to build self confidence.
