Say black people/students/etc instead of blacks because using black as an adjective emphasizes the humanity of black people.

  • Black people have generally requested not to be called "blacks."

    • It is really important to respect the way people want to be addressed.

  • It may seem strange to focus on the emphasis but, consider that people typically say "white people" and not "whites."

  • Using language that respects the humanity and requests of your students will help you create a safe space for a diverse set of students.
