Provide multiple deadlines for small segments of larger projects to teach students time management skills.

  • Segmented projects will be less overwhelming for students because of the manageable size of the pieces.
    • Multiple deadlines will result in higher quality student work.
  • This also allows students to seek help throughout the project.

Be explicit when you’re making suggestions to student work, rather than corrections, so your students understand the difference and that it is okay to disagree with your suggestions.
When explaining code to the class, project your code and use a tablet to draw on top of it. Ask students for debugging suggestions to make them more comfortable finding bugs and to show them that all programmers, even you, make mistakes.
Have students write end-of-unit reflections to review material, monitor their learning, and integrate writing into your CS course.
