Misconception: Students think that “turn” blocks in Scratch imply a change in position within the coordinate plane.

  • To show them that this is not true, use a Simon Says activity—when students just turn in place, their position doesn’t change.
    • "Turn" blocks in Scratch simply cause the sprite to rotate right or left a certain number of degrees.

Misconception: Return is a mystery to students because they may not understand that functions have an entry point and an exit point. This results in mistakes such as assuming Python will return the right thing.
When explaining code to the class, project your code and use a tablet to draw on top of it. Ask students for debugging suggestions to make them more comfortable finding bugs and to show them that all programmers, even you, make mistakes.
