Make sure not to ask students of color questions that essentialize their entire race or racism, don’t make the assumption that students of color are experts on all things related to their culture or racism.

  • Asking students of color questions about their race or racism places a large burden on these students that isn’t about learning the course content.

    • In science classrooms where there are only a handful of students of color, it is tiring for these students to always be treated as the race/culture expert.

    • Remember, Black people and other people of color are not a monolith.

      • One student of color is not a representative for all people of color.

        • People of color have a diversity of cultures and practices.

  • Don’t put students in a position where they have to assume the role of the teacher when it comes to race and racism.
