Have students give you instructions on how to get from the door to chair on the other side of the room to teach them to be precise when giving instructions to a computer.

  • This is a good activity to use when introducing the idea of programming.
    • Students should walk away understanding that learning to program is like learning a language that the computer knows.
  • To simulate a computer that only knows a particular programming language, tell students they are only allowed to give you instructions using the following commands:
    • Forward
    • Turn left
    • Turn right
    • Turn around
    • Sit down
  • Follow up activity: have the students pair up and acting out a smaller scale version of this activity with a partner.
  • This is a way to customize the PB&J demonstration for younger kids.
