Take extra time to encourage beginner students to learn more about CS, by (1) promoting AP CS and (2) using a final project for students already taking AP CS

  • On promoting AP CS:
    • Invite parents and students to presentations that outline advantages of such classes.
    • When recruiting students for advanced CS classes, don’t use grades, teacher recommendations, or exams in the slides.
  • On using a final project for students taking AP CS:
    • After taking the AP test, encourage students to continue “learning and creating” by taking on a final project.
      • Possibilities for such a project include learning a new language, making an applet, or engaging in robotics.
    • Encourage students to be realistic about how much they can achieve in the remaining class time.
