Don’t express shock or “compliment” students for breaking stereotypes associated with their race or gender; these statements are microaggressions, they discriminate against these students, often unintentionally.
Encourage students to work on side projects to make sure they are getting enough programming practice and to make them more marketable.
Provide feedback on things your students can control, their hard work or their persistent effort, to reinforce that through hard work they can get smarter.
