Ask students how they are doing on assignments to keep them accountable and identify unproductive students when necessary.

  • If you have access to iClickers, consider polling your students during class to gauge how far into an assignment they are.

Give students an opportunity (or force them) to use GDB and Valgrind. It teaches them how to use important debugging tools, it develops their debugging skills and it improves their code designing skills and code testing skills.
Create hands-on, meaningful, and relevant projects where students produce artifacts that require rigorous CS content-knowledge and software engineering skills.
Create a list of questions pertaining to the daily lab material that focus on the concepts of lab exercises to ask students, individually or in groups, to gauge student’s understanding of the material.
