Make sure students understand that collaboration is important, and make collaboration easier by having students play an icebreaker after groups are assigned

  • All STEM fields rely on people working together. This is why it is so important for students to experience group work and learn ways to create positive group-work environments.
  • Any kind of icebreaker at the beginning of group work is crucial for having good communication and group. A quick search online will help you find a bunch of activities, like icebreakers, to use.
    • Here is an example icebreaker from SciGirls Seven: How to Engage Girls in Stem titled, "Who Am I?"
      • "Pin the name of an animal, planet, or female scientist to the back of each girl. Girls must try to guess who they are by asking one question at a time to others in the room. Allow 10 minutes for girls to wander the group asking questions. The answers will help them discover the secret identities written on their backs."
    • All SciGirls Seven tips are "Girl Focused & Boy Friendly!"
