Include on tests questions taken from earlier assignments and labs to mitigate the fact that you can’t grade every assignment.

  • In lab-based courses, you want students to do all of the assigned work but cannot always grade every lab.
    • This can create tension and may result in some students never completing many assigned labs.
    • Advertise that ⅓ to ½ of each test in introductory courses will be taken from lab exercises. Since some test questions may combine elements of several labs, modest editing of lab instructions might be needed.
    • When handing back tests, highlight which questions came from labs (or assignments), so students can observe that doing non-graded coursework is valuable in preparing for tests.
    • Students find themselves well prepared for tests by virtue of completing both graded and non-graded work!
