Have students design time counters to reinforce place value and lists.

  • Time counters require understanding the relationships between the ones, tens, and hundreds places.
  • Challenge students by encouraging them to figure out how to save finish times, which can be accomplished by inserting the time into a list.

When students consider a function that produces incorrect outputs to be working, assign problems that provide clear on-screen feedback when a function is incorrect.
Ask students "do you know in advance how many times you'll need to go through the loop?" when deciding between using a for or a while loop, because this is a good rule of thumb for them to use.
Misconception: Students often have off by 1 errors when working with loops, which can result from mixing up > and >= as well as forgetting that arrays start at index 0.
