Avoid recapping assigned reading to encourage students to complete the reading before class.

  • This doesn’t preclude answering questions students may have about the reading.
  • If you recap the reading, students quickly learn there is no reason to complete the reading on their own.
  • If a lab session starts with students working collaboratively, their preparation is clear to their lab partners. Unprepared students may feel embarrassed in front of their peers, giving incentives to do preliminary reading and have questions ready.
