Have a way of preventing students from looking at their computer screens when you need to get the whole class’s attention.

  • It can be very distracting, for both the students and the teacher, when students can look at their screens when they shouldn’t be.
  • Try the following techniques to get attention off of the screen:
    • If students are using laptops, require them to physically close them when you call the class’s attention.
    • It may be helpful to tape cloth "curtains" over computer monitors that students can lower when they are supposed to be directing their attention toward the teacher.
    • It can be especially helpful to have a consistent sound or procedure that you always use when you need the whole class to stop what it’s doing and listen to you.
      • Call bells are useful for this, and can be purchased from many office supply stores.
