Don’t shortchange your students; believe they can do investigative problem solving and assign open-ended projects.

  • Try an assignment that doesn’t have step-by-step directions.
    • Release your student’s "inner explorers and let them surprise you!"
  • Assigning open-ended projects can be very tricky, you need to stay within a certain time frame but you also want students to have as much of a say as possible in the project.
    • A simple way to solve this problem is to have a project that is more directed to start out with and that you can open up as time allows.
    • Having more materials than you think students can use is helpful as well.
